During Justinian's reign, the Byzantine Empire extended westward. Today, we learned how it extended north as well!
Today we better understood the difference between the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches, and we also examined the Orthodox emphasis on icons and their supposed supernatural powers.
Tomorrow, we may begin some work on another Orthodox sect: The Russian Church!
Today, we took our map quiz on Eastern European geographic markers, and then we examined the Hagia Sophia. Continue to think about what the Byzantines valued, both when they were under Justinian's rule and also when they were under the Turks' rule.
Today, we got to better understand the capital of the Byzantine Empire: Constantinople. We learned how its geographic location served to benefit the empire for the better part of a millennium, but we also discovered how and why it incurred many threats.
Tomorrow, you will have a map quiz on the empire. Be sure to commit those geographic markers to memory!
